The first form of river cruising in Europe, now mostly replaced by river ships. Originally, they were very basic accomodations.
Now there are multiple luxury barge cruising options. European Waterways, French Waterways, Barge Lady, and Les Bateaux Belmond are examples. Generally 6-20 passengers.
Both cabin booking and full boat charter are available. Cost is in the range of the luxury and ultraluxury category, and can be more.
Standard Longship River Cruises
This category generally includes Viking, Avalon and AMA waterways
AMA and Avalon generally have smaller capacity (avg 128-144) than Viking (avg 190). Some would put these two in the luxury category. Though they tend to have more amenities included and have a fitness center and onboard bicycles that are not found on Viking, they don’t reach the level of luxury travel listed below.
Luxury and Ultraluxury River Cruises
This category generally includes Emerald, Scenic, Riverside, Tauck and Uniworld
Luxury river cruises focus on a more intimate experience, with fewer passengers and a higher crew-to-guest ratio, leading to more personalized service.
You will find a wider range of amenities, such as specialty restaurants, upscale staterooms with premium linens and amenities, and they usually include more in the fare, like specialty dining and beverages. Butler service may be included.
